Photos: Chandigarh’s green heritage, a step towards conversation of old trees

With UT administration declaring 31 trees of three different species - peepal, banyan and mango located in different parts of the city as heritage trees, the department of Forest and wildlife in Chandigarh have sought suggestions from residents of any other heritage tree they feel in their area. The suggestions should be sent within 15 days, which will be examined by the committee and if found suitable, such trees will be recommended for inclusion in the list of Heritage trees.

Department of Forest and wildlife have sought suggestions from residents of any other heritage tree they feel in their area. A banyan tree seen at Guga Ki Marhi shrine is 250 years old. Santosh Kumar, the chief conservator of forests, said, “We have decided to give residents a fortnight-long window in which they can nominate trees they think deserve this status along with a picture of the tree and other details.Once the trees are declared heritage, it is our to maintain them and upkeep of the premises around the said trees. ” (HT Photo)
