According to a study published in the European Journal of Preventive Cardiology, poor oral hygiene leads to bacteria in the blood, causing inflammation in the body. Inflammation increases the risks of atrial fibrillation (irregular heartbeat) and heart failure (the heart’s ability to pump blood or relax and fill with blood is impaired).  (Photo by Diana Polekhina on Unsplash)expand-iconView Photos in a new improved layout

In an interview with Zarafshan Shiraz, Dr Tilak Suvarna, Senior Interventional Cardiologist at Mumbai's Asian Heart Institute, revealed, “Research studies have shown a positive association between periodontal disease and cardiovascular disease, with an estimated 3.5-fold increased risk of heart disease. The mechanism of this association is however not clear. It is hypothesized that the bacteria in the mouth induce an inflammatory and immune response which can independently damage the heart.” Asserting the need to protect our hearts from the deleterious effects of periodontal disease, he listed 5 ways to maintain oral health for a healthy heart.  (Pixabay)expand-iconView Photos in a new improved layout

1. Brush your teeth, preferably with a soft-bristled brush at least twice a day for two minutes each time. Replace your toothbrush every three to four months as the bristles tend to get splayed or worn.   (Pixabay)expand-iconView Photos in a new improved layout
