This year, Eid-e-Milad or Eid Milad-un-Nabi to mark the birth of Prophet Muhammad, will be celebrated on September 27 in Saudi Arabia, UAE etc and on September 28 in India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and other parts of the subcontinent region and it is important to note that while Mawlid is celebrated with great enthusiasm in many parts of the world, there are variations in how it is observed and whether it is observed at all because some Muslim communities and scholars do not celebrate it, considering it an innovation (bid'ah) in Islam, while others view it as a way to express their love and admiration for the Prophet Muhammad. Also called Nabid and Mawlid in colloquial Arabic, Muslims from Salafi and Wahhabi schools of thought do not mark the tradition of festivities while the festival is celebrated by the Sufi and Barelvi sect during Rabi’ al-awwal, the third month in the Islamic calendar but the way it is celebrated can vary from quiet and reflective to lively and festive, depending on local customs and beliefs.
