Punjab eyes 200 lakh tonnes of paddy as procurement begins

Paddy has been cultivated in 74 lakh acres of Punjab this year and 22 million metric tonnes of rice residue is expected to be generated. Punjab alone contributes 65% of the total residue produced by the northwestern states. Punjab is expecting to procure 200 lakh tonnes of paddy this kharif season which started on October 1.The state has directed all the heads of state procurements agencies as well as general manager, Food Corporation of India, Punjab region, to personally supervise the paddy procurement operations.
