17-yr-old who went swimming with friends drowns in quarry at Chakan
Gautum Nitoor drowned at 10:45am on Friday in the water body inside the stone quarry in moi village
One day after three MBA students drowned in the Mulshi dam waters on Thursday, a teenager who was having fun with his friends in a water body inside a Chakan stone quarry, drowned on Friday.
His body was fished out 24 hours later on Saturday morning by a team of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Pune.
Identified as Gautum Nitoor, 17, he was a resident of Sukhwani Oasis building in Spine City society of Moshi. The teenager drowned at 10:45am on Friday in the water body inside the stone quarry owned by Shahji Karte in Moi village of Chakan.
The student, who’s father Sudhir Nitoor runs a terracotta business, had passed Class 11 exams from DY Patil college in the science stream and had moved to Vidya Valley school for Class 12 board exams in the upcoming academic year. He had gone to the quarry along with four of his friends from tuition classes.
“He ran out of breath and drowned in the deeper end. His friends tried to save him, but could not. They had gone there on motorbikes,” said senior police inspector Sunil Pawar of Chakan police station under Pimpri-Chinchwad police jurisdiction.
“The local administration tried to recover his dead body on Friday, but were unsuccessful. NDRF deep diving team was requisitioned and during search ops his body was recovered by NDRF deep divers today at 1050 hours (10:50am),” read a statement from the NDRF.
The incident was recorded as an accidental death at Chakan police station. The body was taken to the local government hospital in Chakan for post-mortem before handing it over to the family on Saturday afternoon. Gautum’s friends had to all record their statements about the drowning with the police.
On Thursday, three MBA students from Bharati Vidyapeeth Deemed to be University had drowned in the Mulshi dam waters during an outing with friends.
