Baramati teenager commits suicide allegedly over sexual harassment

The 16-year-old allegedly consumed a poisonous substance at her residence in Songaon village, around 100 kilometres from on August 11, following which she was admitted to a private hospital. She passed away on August 22.

A teenager from Baramati died on Wednesday with police suspecting suicide because of sexual harassment, officials said.

The 16-year-old allegedly consumed a poisonous substance at her residence in Songaon village, around 100 kilometres from Pune on August 11, following which she was admitted to a private hospital. She passed away on August 22.

The man, accused by the victim of sexual harassment, is believed to be 18- or 19-years old and has been booked for abetment to suicide and sexual harassment of a child, police said.

The man, who has not yet been arrested, is a resident of a neighbouring village. Since he has not yet been arrested, his name is being withheld by the police.

The girl had recently finished Class 10 from Dorelwadi English medium school in Baramati.

"This has been happening for the past six months according to her family. The complaint was filed by her brother," said senior police inspector Vitthal Dabade of Baramati taluka police station, under the jurisdiction of the Pune rural police .

The girl did not leave a suicide note, family members told the police.

A case under Section 306 of the Indian Penal Code and Sections 8 and 12 of Protection of Children against Sexual Offence (Pocso) was registered at Baramati taluka police station.
