Four persons including three members of a family were killed when their speeding car rammed into a truck on the Mumbai – Bengaluru highway near new Katraj tunnel during the wee hours of Monday.
The deceased have been identified as Dr Yashwant Pandurang Mane (56), his wife Sharda (47) and their son Hrishikesh Mane (20), all residents of Chunabhatti in Mumbai including their relative Ramchandra Krushna Surve (71). Hrishikesh was behind the wheels when the accident took place at around 4 am, police officials said. Late on Monday evening, police booked Hrishikesh for rash and negligent driving. According to the police, Hrishikesh lost control of the wheels and rammed into the truck in Jambhulwadi area.
According to the police, the Mane family hails from Mhaswad village in Maan taluka of Satara district but currently lives in Mumbai’s Sion area. Dr Mane’s daughter is a student of a prominent medical college in Satara district. The family had left their home in Mumbai on Sunday to drop her back to college. “After dropping their daughter, the Mane family visited their native place and then late night started their return journey to Mumbai when they met with an accident in Pune,” said assistant police inspector SP Yadav.
According to Yadav, the car came from behind and rammed into the truck. “It is the fault of the car driver and accordingly he has been booked,” Yadav said.
The impact was such that all four persons died on the spot.
After receiving information, the police officials from Bharati Vidyapeeth police station rushed to the spot. The bodies were handed over to their relatives after the post mortem was conducted at the Sassoon hospital.
