Anushka, the elder daughter of the murdered Ashwini and murder-accused Datta Bhondhve, is alive today.

Anushka’s baby brother Anuj, who is eight months old, did not survive the calculated and gruesome murder plot, hatched by his father, Datta. Anushka did, only because she chose to stay back with her grandfather in Nighoje, near Mahalunge, on the fateful night the murders took place.

Datta and Ashwini had a love marriage in 2014 and had two children in the four years of their marriage.

Besides the deceased baby Anuj, Anushka was aged four. Ashwini and Datta themselves had two siblings each. While Ashwini was a resident of Wakad and a native of Chandkhed village, Datta’s family members are natives of Ravet and lived in a house in Maval.

Ashwini studied till Class 12 and was a housewife and Datta held a transport service provisional contract with a local company. His family has at least two farms and a three-storey house.

The primary motive behind the murder? Datta was involved with a woman outside of his marriage, Sonali Jawle, and wanted to marry her, according to the police.

According to senior police inspector Rajendra Kadam of Pune police crime branch, the story Datta told the police is: “He found his wife's phone in the car after the incident as it started ringing. He then used the phone to call his brother and spoke to him for close to half an hour and told him that he was robbed, before approaching the local police.”

"He was in touch with a few other women too. We questioned one other woman before we found the woman who was involved and put him in touch with the two assailants (Prashant Bhor and Pawan Jadhav)," said Ganesh Shinde, deputy commissioner of police, Zone-3.

Bhor and Jadhav had been contracted to kill Datta’s family for Rs 2 lakh. Immediately after the killing of Ashwini and Anuj, Datta paid them Rs 50,000 in cash

Ashwini, according to her family members, may have been unaware of Datta's multiple affairs.

“He didn’t ever speak much and our sister never complained against him. We never could have guessed he could do such a thing,” Shinde added. “She was with us for the past four-five days. They had dinner and left from our place in Dange chowk at around 8:30 pm,” said Mohan Shinde, cousin of the deceased. “Her face was completely black (when they saw her). We had to cremate the baby and our girl together with a heavy heart,” added Shinde.

The four will be produced in a local court on Monday.
