Man accused of burglary hurts self to evade arrest at Kondhwa, Pune
A 23-year-old man with a long-standing criminal record tried to hurt himself to evade arrest at Kondhwa police station on Monday evening.
The man was identified as Rafik Hussain Shaikh, a resident of Bhagyodaynagar in Kondhwa Khurd. Most of the cases against Shaikh are registered at Sahkarnagar and Warje police stations. Shaikh has a total of 30 cases registered against him in various parts of the city. In the five cases which came to light with his recent arrest, the police have recovered stolen items worth Rs 3,53,500.
He was sitting on the ground next to the lock-up in the investigation room of Kondhwa police station with his back facing the window when the incident occurred.
"He was arrested in a house break-in and theft case. The court had remanded him to three days police custody which ended on Monday. He was identified as the accused in three other cases of house break-in and theft in Kondhwa and Bibvewadi, and a motor vehicle and television theft case as well. After the custody was over in one case, we took him to court and got his custody in another case," said Santosh Shinde, police sub inspector (PSI) of Kondhwa police station.
“The registration process had to be repeated for him in another case. When the process was on, he got agitated and banged his head against a window,” PSI Shinde said.
Shaikh suffered a cut near his eyebrow in the impact. He was granted bail on Tuesday. A case under Section 309 (attempted suicide) was registered against him at Kondhwa police station.
Similar cases of arrested men trying to evade arrest have been reported form Wanowrie and Hadapsar police stations in the past.
