Man found smuggling gold powder concealed in paste at Pune airport

The customs officials at the Pune airport intercepted smuggled gold worth over Rs 28 lakh in possession of a man from Chennai, Tamil Nadu. The man was identified as Mohamed Safeer Umar Sowbar. The man came on the customs officials’ radar at the security check.
The security officials at Pune airport, Lohegaon, intercepted the man in possession of gold in powder form concealed inside a brown coloured paste. The recovered gold was found to be 925 gram of 24 karat variety. The worth of the recovered gold was estimated to be Rs 28,30,500.
He later admitted to have smuggled the gold by concealing it. The gold was confiscated under The Customs Act, 1962. A case under relevant sections of Indian Penal Code was registered at Vimantal police station.
On Sunday, the customs officials had seized 821 boxes of Pine cigarettes from foreigners travelling to the city. The officials recovered 1,64,200 cigarettes from seven foreign nationals. They were carrying it in nine different bags.
