A 35-year-old businessman, his wife and two daughters were found dead at their home in Shivane in southwest Pune on Friday night. Officials from the Uttamnagar police station said, it is believed that the husband and wife may have poisoned their daughters before kiling themselves by hanging.
“The two poisoned the two girls first. When the girls were dead, the two hanged themselves. The wife hanged herself first and breathed her last before the rope snapped and she fell. The husband put her body on the bed and then killed himself,” an official from Uttamnagar police said. Senior police inspector Hemant Bhat of Uttamnagar police station is investigating the matter.
The man, who had a plastic moulding business in the neighbouring village of Nanded had left a suicide note in his pocket in which he had cited crippling debt as the reason for the drastic step, according to the police.
The incident came to light when one of the neighbours called the deceased man’s brother who informed the police.
The deceased man was identified as Naresh Suresh Chaudhary, 35; his wife Nilima Chaudhary, 33; and two daughters Shravani Chaudhury, 9 and Shreya Chaudhury, 7. Naresh’s elder brother, Ganesh Chaudhury, informed the police.
The bodies of the four were sent to the Sassoon General Hospital for post mortem. The doctors have preserved the viscera of the four bodies to identify the cause of death.
The two girls studied at a nearby school while Nilima used to teach children through private tuitions in a separate room in Uttamnagar, a few kilometer away from their house. The police said that she had stopped teaching recently.
“Their relatives live in Uttamnagar. She used to take tuition classes in a room there. The family members did not really speak to anyone in the society. We have been living here since the past 3-4 years and they have been here since the beginning. We only knew them by their face,” said a woman from the housing society.
While their deaths have been recorded as “accidental,” the police are likely to file a case of murder against the two deceased parents.
“The family did not really have any friends. Even the brother was not much in touch with the (deceased) man. He says the man has a plastic mounding business in Nanded,” the official said. The police are yet to find out whether he had a factory or trading business and the amount of debt he was under.
