Pune man held for driving wife to suicide within three months of wedding

The 20-year-old woman hanged herself to death at their residence on Sunday. Her body was sent for post-mortem. The victim’s brother, Akash Vanaskar, 25, filed a case against her in-laws.

A man and three of his family members were arrested for allegedly driving his wife to suicide within three months of their wedding. They were all remanded in four days in police custody on Tuesday by a local court in Pune.

The man was identified as Pravin Lakshman Waghmare, 25, while his deceased wife was identified as Aarti Pravin Waghmare, 20. The two lived with his family, including father Laksman Gangaram Waghmare, 48; mother Lalita Laksman Waghmare, 45; and brother Sachin Lakshman Waghmare (21), who were also arrested. The family stayed at Borate vasti area of Chandannagar.

Vanaskar submitted in his complaint that the accused family members complained about the small size of the wedding hall booked by her parents and gifts distributed at the wedding. The victim’s husband was also physically and mentally torturing her to bring Rs 2,00,000 from her parents, as the latter allegedly wanted to start a business with that money.

“Pravin worked at a private hospital in Vimannagar. We will be investigating what kind of business he wanted to start,” said assistant police inspector SY Rajguru of Chandannagar police station, who is investigating the case.

A case under Sections 498(a) (domestic violence), 306 (abetment to suicide) and 34 (common intention) of Indian Penal Code was registered against the four at Chandannagar police station.
