Sameer Patil, a 33-year-old police havaldar (constable) has been arrested by the Chaturshringi police on Tuesday, for allegedly filming a 30-year-old policewoman while she was bathing. Patil was sent to 14 days in magisterial custody remand (MCR) in Yerawada central jail, by a local court, on Tuesday.

The incident occurred around 10 am on Monday when the woman, who works in the Damini squad, was bathing in the bathroom located in the kitchen of her house.

The Damini squad is a squad of policewomen tasked exclusively with protecting the safety of women in the city.

The policeman, who works at Khadak police station, and his family live in the same vicinity in Aundh where the complainant woman lives, according to the First Information Report (FIR). “When the woman realised she was being filmed, she and her husband confiscated Patil’s mobile phone from him. When they tried to leave the premises to come to the police station, Patil’s family members tried to block their way,” said senior police inspector Dayanand Dhome of Chaturshringi police station.

Patil’s wife, his mother and brother blocked the complainant woman’s husband’s vehicle and verbally abused him, according to the police. The police are also on a lookout for Patil’s relatives.

“Our commissioner madam (Rashmi Shukla) is making efforts to make the city safe for women through initiatives like ‘Police Kaka’ and ‘Buddy Cop’. This incident should be a strong message to everyone that we take it very seriously and such behaviour will not be tolerated even if the person involved is a part of the police force,” senior PI Dhome added.

A case under Section 354(c), 341, 323, 504, 506 and 34 of Indian Penal Code was registered at Chaturshringi police station against Patil and three others.

Two female officers, assistant police inspector (API) Bhosale and police sub inspector (PSI) Tilekar, along with Vaishali Jadhav-Mane, assistant commissioner of police, Chaturshringi division and senior police inspector Dayanand Dhome visited the complainant’s home.
