A new play from the production house of late actor Raja Paranjape is set to regale the audience with a humorous story or a light comedy on marriage. It will have old and new Hindi as well as Marathi film songs interspersed within the play.

A two-act play, Brand Baja Baraat deals with the ever omnipotent question of a girl’s marriage and her father’s dilemma. “Will it be love or will it be an arranged marriage is always a question which haunts every parent when their daughter comes of marriageable age,” says director Archana Rane, granddaughter of actor Raja Paranjape.

“I wanted to find a film on the stage – it should look like cinema on stage. I didn’t want to make it a typical play, hence, we have made it into a modern musical using Hindi film music and dance to introduce this most talked about topic in everyone’s home. This play revolves around the concept of marriage between two generations, and bringing about a compromise on the thoughts of two generations and making the best of it,” she added.

The play took six months to stage and it has been a very interesting and fun journey for the cast and crew, which has Atul Kaswa plays the role of the father, Shruti Atre as the feisty daughter, Parth Rane, Ameya Barve, Anagha Harkare, Payal Jadhav, singers Dhaval Chandwadkar and Rama Kulkarni, who will be singing live as well as playing characters in the play.

The use of the word ‘Brand’ in the name of the play is also important in terms of relaying the message. “The ‘brand’ in this play is to convey the idea of the new generation’s use of social media in even finding their soulmate. It is from the point of view of the new generation which we are trying to reach out to the audience,” said writer Akshay Joshi, who has also written other plays like Ankur and Ambhi Marathi, both under the same production.

This will be the sixth performance in Pune, though they have performed 14 shows so far. The play will be performed on 13 September at 5 pm at Balgandharva Rang Mandir.
