All diploma courses run under the Human Resource Development Ministry will be transferred to the Skill Development Ministry soon. In an interaction with media persons at the induction programme of Symbiosis Skills and Open University, Union minister for skill development and entrepreneurship, Rajiv Pratap Rudy said that the procedures for shifting all diploma courses to the authority of the skill development ministry from the human resource development ministry has already started. “The process will be completed soon and the courses will then work under skill development initiatives of the Prime Minister,” said Rajiv Rudy.
He was talking at the induction programme for the first batch of students of the Symbiosis Skills and Open University, which was held on July 29 at Kiwale in Pune. Several industry leaders were also present at the function.
“68 years after independence, for the first time ever, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has emphasised on skill development and hence, wanted a separate ministry of skill development. Such a skill development university will help in nation building. We have lots of educated, highly qualified citizens, but the number of skilled citizens is comparatively less. We have professors for engineers and doctors but we don't have one for plumbing or carpentry, which is necessary in a society like ours. This is the reason why the government has started working on this project,” said Rudy, while addressing the students present at the programme.
“We have benefited with a significantly better demographic dividend and hence, should provide skill training for 66 crore of youth population present in the country,” said founder president of Symbiosis International University, Dr S B Mujumdar. Symbiosis Skills and Open University has received responses from over 300 students who will soon be joining the course. The campus for the newly established college includes centres of excellence and learning factories with industrial machinery for training. Top companies from various industries have partnered with the university for development and excellence. The university will be hosting several courses including BBA, automobiles, construction, ports and terminal management, logistics, retail and bachelor of science in beauty and wellness.
Maharashtra minister for labour and skill development, Sambhaji Patil Nilangekar, was also present at the induction programme along with Dr Swati Mujumdar, principal director of Symbiosis open education society.
