Pune Aasakta, one of the leading contemporary theatre organisations based out of Pune is known for their experimental plays. Aasakta breaks away from traditional moulds to create fresh idioms in theatre. This time, under first-time director of Suyog Deshpande, Aasakta presents a play called Season X | Episode Y: S X | E Y.

Suyog, who was among the 10 directors at the directors’ laboratory conducted by Mohit Takalkar in June 2015, said directing this play was a challenge and also a thrill. “There is this constant urge to seek out the new, create something afresh, hence, we deal with contemporary aesthetics and unique, contemporary content.”

“The idea of this play came from discussion with Mohit Takalkar. I belong to the young theatre wing of Aasakta and we wanted to explore something which deals with the sensibility of our generation. When Mohit suggested the idea of compiling short plays, we were excited, energised and thrilled to explore this concept.

“After a lot of readings and improvisations we finalised 20 plays, all with different themes, yet with some similarity with each other. These 20 plays were compiled into a single theatrical piece,” said Suyog.

The play talks about us being globalised, but disconnected. “We are living in an era of constant fear and terror. We are confused. We are killers, yet we are getting killed. We are becoming robots. We are politically abused. This play Season X | Episode Y is a question. It deals with the question of human identity, internal conflicts and the dark side of human emotions.”

The play is a series of 17 short plays featuring 35 vibrant characters searching for meaning in their lives.

The play is 70 minutes long and has Aditya Mangate, Athashree Thube, Hrishikesh Pujari, Jeevak More, Manasi Bhawalkar, Siddhesh Dhuri, Surabhi Dhamal and Vibhav Takey playing various characters. It will be performed on February 3 at the Sudrashan Rangmanch at 7.30 pm.
