The Punjab government has informed the Punjab and Haryana high court that as many as 120 marriage palaces being run illegally across the state have been sealed, closed or demolished in the recent past.

This was revealed by special secretary, local government, Kamal Kishore Yadav during the proceedings of a contempt petition before the high court. The plea alleging non-compliance on closure of illegal marriage halls was filed in August 2016.
The court was told two separate committees have been set up to keep a check on any illegal marriage palace functioning in the state. One such committee is for the area falling in the municipal limits and the other one outside the municipal limits, the court was told.
The high court bench of justice Rajan Gupta while fixing the matter for May 5 for further hearing has asked the government to tell the court about the members in both the committees and send a compliance report on closure of illegal marriage palaces.
