A 16-year-old resident of Dera Bassi in Chandigarh, whose baby girl was abandoned by her stepfather and a neighbour in a Chandigarh park on Sunday, was reportedly raped by her brother, aged 17, resulting in the pregnancy. He was apprehended by the police on Tuesday.

Acting on the victim’s complaint the police booked four persons, including a staff nurse at the Dera Bassi civil hospital, for abandoning the baby.

The juvenile, a Class 6 dropout, has confessed to the police about sexually exploiting his sister.

“We have registered a case against the 17-year-old brother of the victim, her stepfather (who is also her late father’s younger brother), two female neighbours and a staff nurse of the Dera Bassi Civil Hospital,” said Bhinder Singh, in charge of the Mubariakpur police post in Dera Bassi.

The victim was traced after the Mohali Childline 1098 sent out alerts about the abandoned baby and a team was sent to her village.

“Admitting that she had delivered the child the victim had said that she had been raped by her brother. He was apprehended in the house by the police,” said Dr Sangeeta Jund, project director, Childline.
The victim in her statement to the police said her neighbour and stepfather wanted to conceal the birth and had planned to abandon the newborn at the Dera Bassi hospital but the staff nurse there had warned they would get caught. She had then advised them to take her to the Mother Teresa Missionary of Charity but they had instead left her in the park.
Living with her brother, mother and stepfather in a two-room house, the victim said her brother had raped her repeatedly. The child had been born at home on July 28.
On receiving a phone call from Sector 23 resident Ranbir Singh that a child wrapped in a sheet had been found near his home, the Chandigarh police on July 29 had rescued and rushed the infant to the Government Multi Specialty Hospital (GMSH), Sector 16. Her health is currently being monitored.

A case under Section 318 (concealment of birth by secret disposal of body) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) has been registered at the Sector 17 police station in Chandigarh.
