3 decades on, Nangal-Talwara rail line project gets PM push

The rail line between Himachal and Punjab was sanctioned in 1981-82 but is pending as Himachal was initially reluctant to spare land for the project. Later, it cited shortage of funds. Once completed, the rail link will shorten the distance between Punjab’s Nangal Dam and Talwara. More than 80% of the proposed line passes through Himachal Pradesh.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday has asked Punjab and Himachal Pradesh governments to facilitate the work on the Nangal Dam-Talwara railway line on the ground level to avoid further delay in the project.

Reviewing the progress of infrastructure works in various states on Wednesday, the PM asked the chief secretaries of both the states to expedite the work.”

The rail line between Himachal and Punjab was sanctioned in 1981-82 but is pending as Himachal was initially reluctant to spare land for the project. Later, it cited shortage of funds. Once completed, the rail link will shorten the distance between Punjab’s Nangal Dam and Talwara. More than 80% of the proposed line passes through Himachal Pradesh.

During interaction, the PM also asked officials to expedite resolution of grievances related to school education and literacy.
