The information has been provided by assistant town planner, Zone D, Surinder Singh Bindra, in reply to an RTI plea filed by Arvind Sharma.

Sources in MC say that a proposal to regularise these colonies had been sent to the state government, indicating that there was a nexus between the civic body officials and colonisers.

The modus operandi is simple carve a colony in violation of all norms and the civic body officials would do the rest to get it regularised.

Bindra, however, didn't pick up the phone when this correspondent tried to contact him to know whether the MC had sent a proposal to regularise these illegal colonies.

There are isolated incidents wherein MC authorities may have demolished small illegal structures, why the civic body doesn't touch illegal colonies is anybody's guess.

Some of the illegal colonies include Joginder Nagar, Haibowal; Mahavir Jain Colony, Haibowal Kalan; Guru Gian Vihar, Jawaddi, Karnail Singh Nagar (phase-3), Phullawal, Daljit Nagar, Barewal, Silver Colony, Luxmi Nagar Chowk; Prakash colony, Seikh Colony, Urban Vihar, Jawaddi.
