Admn banks on movie characters to increase voter turnout
To ensure that maximum voters turn up on election day, the district administration, along with various banks and educational organisations, have taken to installing metaphoric hoardings featuring popular movie characters.
To ensure that maximum voters turn up on election day, the district administration, along with various banks and educational organisations, have taken to installing metaphoric hoardings featuring popular movie characters.
The district administration has selected a total of 16 themes, of which hoardings on two themes have already been installed at various points of the city. Rest of the theme-based hoardings will be installed soon.
These two hoardings feature sketches of actor Aamir Khan as his character from 'Ghajini' and Ranbir Kapoor from 'Rockstar'. Messages about value of voting have been printed on the hoardings in English and Punjabi, besides the name of the organisations, who have not been charged by the administration for putting up the hoardings.
Akash Chopra, a first-time voter, said the hoardings were eye-catching and spread the message clearly, adding that it was a good initiative by the district administration and the organisations.
This is one of the many ways that the administration has adopted to encourage residents to vote. Earlier, it had released a CD containing jingles with the help of singers from Ishmeet Music Academy. Voice clips have also been playing at major cross roads, giving the message of importance of casting votes.
The district administration has also announced discount at eateries and cinema halls for first-time voters. Deputy commissioner Rajat Agarwal said the tie-up with the eateries and cimena halls would be finalised in a couple of days.
Besides, the district administration has also been organising music concerts at shopping malls to grab the attention of voters.
Hoardings, no one's baby
Just a few days after the hoardings were installed, one of the hoardings that was set up on the roadside has fallen prey to mischief makers.
Someone tore the hoarding installed at Basant Singh Khalsa Road. Ironically, most of the district administration officers live in the Officers' Colony outside which this hoarding was installed.
