Association president Mohinder Singh Sidhu claimed that under the the new act, the state government has transferred rent control powers from judicial officers to sub divisional level magistrate. This was not acceptable to lawyers, he said.

He claimed that 600 practising advocates observed the strike and claimed that as most SDMs were not law graduates, it would not be possible for them to handle such cases.

Lawyers also apprehend political intervention in cases under the rent control act after the powers to decide the cases will be transferred from judicial officers to SDMs.
