Bringing some respite to the flight-starved Sree Guru Ram Das Jee International Airport here, Air India has announced to resume the Amritsar-New Delhi-Birmingham flight from August 1.

The Amritar-Birmingham-Toronto route was operational about four years ago, but the flight was withdrawn by Air India due to organisational reasons. Now, the flight will operate four days a week.

Talking to HT, SK Kaundal, station manager, Air India, Amritsar, said, "Our new aircraft, Dreamliner, will fly on this route. The plane will take off from Amritsar and after a halt in New Delhi, fly for Birmingham (UK). The passengers will not have to change the aircraft in Delhi."

The Air India official said the flight would be operational on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. The airline is offering a return fare of around Rs 47,600. The Boeing 787 Dreamliner has 18 executive-class seats and about 240 economy-class seats.

Air India general manager Anil Mehta, who was here on Tuesday, met officials and also paid obeisance at the Golden Temple. He stressed that the flight would benefit people of the region.

Talking to HT, Amritsar airport director Suneel Dutt said, "It is a good development that Amritsar will be connected with Birmingham, but it would have been better had the flights started from Delhi and reached Birmingham via Amritsar. By operating the Amritsar-Delhi-Birmingham flight, we will lose 80 minutes of fuel as the plane will take off from Amritsar, reach Delhi and then again fly over Amritsar to reach Birmingham. We must make it a Delhi-Amritsar-Birmingham flight."

Sydney, Melbourne next

The Air India official in Amritsar claimed that from August 29, the holy city will get a connection with the Australian cities of Sydney and Melbourne.

The official said, "An aircraft will first take passengers from Amritsar to Delhi. From there, after a halt, they will board an aircraft bound for Australia.
