Sarwan's two brothers - Harcharan Singh and Sukhwinder Singh - had already been arrested.

Patti DSP Jagdeep Singh claimed that Sarwan was arrested from Lahore Chowk in Patti area of Tarn Taran district.

The three brothers and two more were booked for allegedly killing Youth Congress leader Sukhraj Singh on May 8 while he was coming out of a gurdwara in Bhagupur, his native village.
Sukhraj was a Congress candidate in the zila parishad elections.

The police had denied it being a murder out of political rivalry and attributed it to personal enmity.

The Congress and Sukhraj's family had been accusing the government of shielding Sarwan Singh.
The Sukhraj's family had threatened to stage a dharna outside the residence Punjab CM Parkash Singh Badal demanding the arrest of Sarwan.

Youth Cong claims Sarwan surrendered

Punjab Youth Congress chief Vikramjit Singh Chaudhary said it was due to the aggressive and constant pressure built up by the Punjab Youth Congress that forced Sarwan to surrender, thus putting a question mark on the credentials and credibility of the state police which advocated that Sarwan Singh was not present at the murder site to please its political bosses. The PYC chief demanded the arrest of the remaining two accused in this case.
