BJP has expansion plan in Punjab, says Venkiah Naidu

The reports that BJP is eyeing to expand its political base in Punjab be with our without alliance partner SAD, got more strength on Thursday with now Union Minister Venkiah Naidu publicly telling to its cadres to get ready as the party has some special plans for Punjab.

“The BJP high command counts Punjab among the states where we have some expansion plans to increase our base. Since only BJP is a party that can give a new direction to growth and development of the country so spreading party’s wings to every nook and corner of the country was every important,” said Naidu while addressing the open session of the national executive meeting of SC Morcha of the party here.

Naidu, who has remained national president of the party twice and is one of the think tank of the party, asked workers to bring all developmental schemes of the Modi government to the doorsteps of every individual and asked worker that if they want to see their party to rise, they have to work very hard.

As reported in the media that National Executive of BJP SC Morcha having a hidden agenda to strengthen its vote bank in Punjab, where dalit population is more than 33%, Naidu’s statement about Punjab at the last leg of his more than 55 minute speech, came as surprise for any and senor leader present on the dais including state BJP president Kamal Sharma and Union Minister Vijay Sampla, were quick to look at the media clearly anticipating the meaning of the statement.

Sources said during his lunch at with the senior leadership of the state in a city hotel, the Union Minister took feedback about the present political scenario of Punjab and the co-ordination among the SAD-BJP on different issues.

As per a leader who attended the lunch, Naidu sought special answers about the recent membership drive of the BJP in which as per party claims, it has made more than 23 lack members.

In a short span of just less than one month, Naidu is the second senior leader of the BJP to hint the party workers that the party is set to expand its base in Punjab.

Only on Wednesday, the national chief of the SC Morcha has admitted in the press conference that Doaba has been selected by the BJP to carry its national executive keeping in view the possibilities of garnering more support from the SC community keeping in view the next assembly polls in Punjab.

Naidu, in his address also said that the BJP in its one year rule has paid special focus on dalit community and has not left any stone unturned for the welfare of the community. “Congress has only used Dalits as the vote bank but the BJP is striving hard to uplift the status of the dalit and backward classes,” said Naidu.

    Karnataka daily Covid cases jump 34% in 24 hours to 1,127; 1,053 in Bengaluru

    Karnataka logged 1,127 cases of Covid-19 on Wednesday, compared to the 839 cases registered the day before. As many as 1,053 of Wednesday's cases were from Bengaluru. Karnataka's cumulative Covid count is 39.75 lakh, with a positivity rate of 4.26%. Bengaluru's 1,053 cases were a big spike over the 775 reported Tuesday. Active cases in the city are 6,056. There are 29 active clusters in Bengaluru, with 26 reporting less than five cases each.

    3 dead after landslide in Karnataka's Dakshina Kannada district

    Three people have died after a landslide in Karnataka's Dakshina Kannada district, a senior police official told news agency ANI Thursday morning. A fourth is being treated in hospital, Rishikesh Sonawane, a police superintendent, said. Three people were rescued from amid the debris, Dr KV Rajendra, the deputy commissioner had said late last night. The Udupi district has called a holiday for anganwadi schools and colleges. Heavy showers are expected there till July 9.

    Fire breaks out in Mumbai supermarket, no injury reported

    A level-2 fire broke out in a supermarket in the Powai area of Mumbai Thursday morning, according to civic officials. The blaze was reported in the Haiko Supermarket on the main street of Hiranandani locality in Powai at around 6.05am. At least eight fire engines and five jumbo tankers were rushed to the site to douse the fire. There was no report of any casualty, the officials said.

    Karnataka rain: Amid red alert, holiday for schools, colleges in these districts

    Owing to continuous rain, educational institutions in several parts of Karnataka will remain shut on Thursday. Top officials in the 4 districts of Karnataka - namely Udupi, Kodagu, Hassan and Uttara Kannada -- have declared holiday for Anganwadi schools and colleges amid the 'red alert' issued by the weather department. The Indian Meteorological Department has predicted extremely heavy rain, ranging above 204.5 mm for these 4 cities.
