The proposed road to connect Surya Enclave and Guru Gobind Singh Avenue localities with Domoria bridge here is still hanging in the balance, courtesy the administration's inability to curb encroachments in Kazi Mandi and Santosh Nagar that fall on this stretch.
Interestingly, the work on the project, announced by the then local bodies minister Manoranjan Kalia five years ago, has not started till date.
The proposal to construct 120-foot wide road from Surya Enclave to Domoria bridge entailed to connect these localities with the main city area for the convenience of local residents so that they do not have to take the highway route while coming to the city.
Residents of Kazi Mandi and Santosh Nagar are learnt to have been protesting against the projector for long.
Moreover, taking the highway route doubles the risk of meeting with accidents, particularly at night. Due to this, many people still do not prefer to live in Surya Enclave Colony and Guru Gobind Singh Avenue.
Recently, the Jalandhar Improvement Trust had announced to have draw of lots for 250 super deluxe apartments in Surya Enclave Extension but only 19 applications were received for the flats.
The lack of direct link to city areas is also affecting Maharaja Ranjit Singh Avenue located adjacent to Surya Enclave.
Not many people have opted to buy flats in the locality since it came to existence seven years ago.
If the proposed link is executed, the distance will be reduced by at least four kilometres.
Besides, localities such as Lamma Pind, Ladhewali, Chuggitti will also benefit from the proposed bypass.
• 2010: The proposal for the project made
• 2012: Construction work on the bypass started
• 2012: The project halts due to encroachments in nearby areas and protest by residents
• 2014: Tendering process for the project started again
