Gynaecologists and radiologists of the city took the first concrete step on Thursday to launch a campaign against prenatal sex determination and selective abortions.
To achieve their objective, obstetricians, radiologists and sonologists held the first meeting of DOSST (Doctors Opposing Sex Selected Termination of Pregnancy) cell at IMA house.
The cell has been formed by the Ludhiana Obstetrics and Gynecological Society under the guidance of FOGSI (Federation of Obstetrics and Gynecological Societies of India).
The cell will be working against the issue of sex selection abortion in liaison with authorities and public.
Taking up the menace of female foeticide as a social cause, different ideas were discussed to create public awareness and make an impact to actually control the declining sex ratio in the region.
The organisation plans to launch several public awareness campaigns at social and community events. The cell will also be holding seminars to guide the younger citizens of the society in schools/colleges to achieve the objectives of boy-girl equality. "We aim to make the youth take active participation in community programmes to eradicate discrimination against the girl child/foetus," said a doctor.
A delegation of DOSST cell earlier met deputy commissioner Rahul Tewari and civil surgeon Dr Subhash Batta to apprise them of the formation of the cell. The cell members have extended their support to the health authorities in creating public awareness and attitudinal changes towards sex selection in the society so as to improve the sex ratio.
Members of the cell will join hands with the administration to achieve the objective in the larger public interest. A meeting for the same will be held with assistant commissioner Apneet Kaur next week under the guidance of the DC Rahul Tewari.
Dr Vaneet Kaur, the president of the cell, said, "We will work towards creating awareness about the Pre Conception and Pre Natal Diagnostic Techniques ((PCPNDT)) Act among doctors doing ultrasonography. To spread awareness about ill effects of female sex selection techniques and sex selected abortions in general public is another motive behind establishing this cell," said Dr Vaneet.
In addition, the cell will liaise with appropriate local Authorities and state supervisory board in order to facilitate better cooperation between doctors and administration in implementation of PCPNDT.
