Dharam Pal was sentenced to death by the Supreme Court in 1999 for killing five members of the family of a girl he raped. Dharam Pal had committed the murders while he was out on bail in 1993 and the President has already dismissed his mercy petition. Dharam Pal was to be hanged on April 15, but the execution was stayed by the high court.

Dharam Pal had moved the court for commuting death sentence to life imprisonment, along with directions to stay his hanging. The case was adjourned on Tuesday in the wake of an appeal filed by Dharam Pal and other similar condemned prisoners in the Supreme Court.
