Inspector general (IG) of police Bathinda Zone Paramraj Singh Umranangal on Tuesday appeared before the Enforcement Directorate (ED) with regard to a case of alleged links with international drug peddler Raja Kandola, a mastermind in the illegal racket of supplying drug Ice across the globe.
Kandola, said to have introduced Ice in Punjab, is already in Tihar jail after the Delhi Police arrested him in 2012. In the investigation it has surfaced that he was “close” to Umranangal. Jalandhar Police had also repeatedly questioned him.
As per a senior ED official, the central agency had called Umranangal for questioning over his alleged ties with Ranjit Singh alias Raja Kandola, who hails from Haipowal village of Banga tehsil of Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar district.
During his interrogation by the ED in the drug case, Kandola in his statement to the ED said Umranangal was his friend, who used to visit his farmhouse in Delhi frequently and the sons of both were also good friends.
However, earlier, Umranangal had outright denied having relations with Kandola.
During the probe, the ED authorities had said that Kandola was just a frontman for “well-connected bigwigs in politics, administration and even police” engaged in shady drug and property deals.
Umrangal, when contacted, denied that he appeared before the ED on Tuesday. “I am in Bathinda right now and am sitting in a house where a death has taken place. I will call you later,” said the IG while ending the call.
But the ED official confirmed that the IG was grilled for nearly two and a half hours. He appeared before the ED after parking his car far from the ED office situated on Cool Road here.
