Dr Ashok Kashyap, former Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) MLA from Indri, was arrested for allegedly conducting sex determination test at his clinic on Sunday.

A joint team of state health officials from Ambala and the local police authorities raided Kashyap’s hospital at Indri, about 35 km from here.

Kashyap was allegedly held after he personally conducted sex determination test on a pregnant woman from Ambala district.

Dr Rajinder, a government doctor from Ambala, who led the raid said that out of Rs 13,000 paid for the test, Rs 5,000 were recovered from a tout while an aide of Kashyap managed to flee with Rs 8,000.

“Before examining a pregnant woman, Kashyap neither demanded any identity of the (decoy) patient nor made an entry in the register. It is major violation of the Pre-Conception Pre-natal Diagnostic Techniques (Regulation and Prevention of Misuse) Act, 1994 (PCPNDT),” said Dr Rajinder.

Kashyap, who had won the elections in 2009, is a special invitee to the INLD’s doctors’ cell.

Sources said that prima facie, it was suspected that the accused was involved in the illegal practice for long.

Officials also recovered a large number of pills used for medical termination of pregnancy and other drugs from a pharmacy working for the hospital from an adjacent shop.

Meanwhile, the ultrasound machine was sealed by the health department. As the accused failed to produce records of purchase of medicines and drugs to the health authorities, officials said that it seemed to be a well-oiled racket run by the politician. An NGO from Ambala helped the state health authorities in nabbing the accused from his health facility.
