Members of the bar association of Faridkot want election instead of the nomination of office-bearers on the first Friday of April.
A faction of lawyers has asked from the bar council that all office-bearers of the association be elected through the democratic system of voting. The association's 62 members have given a written representation to the council in Chandigarh to stop the system of nominations, which is in practice in Faridkot.
The council has issued a notice to the president of the local bar association, asking him to appear before it on Tuesday with all election-related record such as voters' list. The association's president is elected by vote and four other office-bearers by nomination, which 62 lawyers have opposed this year.
“The rules of the bar council state all office-bearers of the bar association, including the president, be elected through voting,” said Parshotam Betab, a senior lawyer here. “Nomination should be only if no consensus is reached.”
“The bar council guidelines have made all the system of bar association election very effective to check double voting, as some lawyers have memberships of two associations,” said Betab. “The council has fixed the first Friday of April as the day of election at all places, besides setting voting as the system in case there is no consensus.”
“There is no harm in applying the democratic system according to the rules of the bar council,” said a member of the bar association, wishing not to be named.
Kulwinder Singh Sekhon, present president of the bar association of Faridkot, confirmed that a meeting had been called on Monday to find out a solution. “The local associations have own constitution,” he said. Asked about the coming appearance before the bar council, he evaded a direct reply.
