The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) called upon all Punjabis to come forward and join hands with AAP for showing the door to the Akali and Congress leaders who had looted Punjab and devastated the young generation by getting them hooked onto drugs.
Taking the lead in appealing to the people to vote for AAP in the 2017 assembly polls, the party's MP from Sangrur Bhagwant Mann ridiculed SAD and the Congress leaders for describing the AAP leadership as immature and inexperienced.
"We do not have the experience of looting the people of Punjab and nor do we know the drug trade," Mann said while addressing yet another impressive rally in Allahadinpur village, 3 km from here on Wednesday.
Mann said the Akali and Congress leaders were only concerned about themselves and their families. For them the common man does not exist, he added.
"However the time has come to write a new chapter in the political history of Punjab. And this chapter will be written by none other than the people of this state," he said while claiming that the people here had made up their minds to get rid of the SAD-BJP.
Mann made it clear that AAP was not a party of leaders but was a party of the masses. The people of Punjab will write their own 'kismat' (future) in 2017 when they vote for AAP, he added while referring to the manner in which the party came to power in Delhi.
"We will not seek votes on communal lines but will do so in the name of Punjabiyat," he added.
The MP also had a dig at the poor law and order situation in the state. He claimed that even the cops in the state were fed up of the VIP culture of the SAD-BJP government.
While referring to deputy chief minister Sukhbir Singh Badal's comments describing AAP as a party of 'jokers', Mann advised the junior Badal to seek the viewpoint of the common man on this. "When you talk of turning Bathinda into Paris or talk about running buses on water, people laugh at you. So better find out who is the real joker," he added.
AAP's Punjab convener Sucha Singh Chottepur too took a dig at the Akali leadership and said SAD was a party of property dealers. The Akali party no longer has leaders of the stature of Master Tara Singh or Sant Fateh Singh, he added. "SAD is now a company of Badals," he added.
Chottepur held the government responsible for the whitefly attack on the cotton crop. He said it was the government which had allowed the sub standard pesticide to make its way into Punjab, he added.
Others who spoke on the occasion include Himmat Singh Shergill, Baljinder Kaur, Iqbal Singh Bhagowalia and a few others
Protest at rally
Two AAP workers were injured when they were attacked and manhandled by a small group of protestors who were led by Harvinder Kaur of nearby Usma village. The woman from Usma had made headlines two years back after she along with some of her relatives were manhandled and beaten up by cops while they were attending a marriage in Tarn Taran.
This had led to the suspension of a number of policemen. The case is still being heard in court and Harvinder Kaur has been provided security on the directions of the Punjab and Haryana high court.
Harvinder Kaur and her supporters were protesting against the enrollment of Manjinder Singh Sidhu into AAP. Sidhu is one of the alleged accused in the Tarn Taran case.
When Harvinder Kaur and her group raised slogans against AAP, they were asked not to disrupt the rally. This led to heated exchanges after which two AAP workers, Jagroop Singh of Dayalpur village and Raminder Singh, the main organiser of the rally, were thrashed by the protesting group.
AAP workers however managed to get hold of Harvinder Kaur and some of her supporters and handed them over to the cops. The police confirmed the developments and said a case would be registered after the medical examination of the two injured party workers.
