The arrests were based on a secret input that some members of an inter-state gang of robbers had entered the district for looting passers-by and shopkeepers, senior superintendent of police Surjit Singh Grewal has said. "Four teams under the supervision of superintendent of police Dilbagh Singh Pannu and laid traps after the input and arrested five people from a house near Geeta Bhawan in Moga," SSP Grewal added.
During the raid, the five men fled the house but the police caught them from outside the town after a long chase. The arrested men, Kuldeep Singh, Mahesh Kumar Chamundi, Jasvir Singh, Sunny and Rajesh Kumar, are all from Moga. The police claim to have seized a 0.32-bore pistol and some swords and baseball bats from them, besides Rs 50,000 cash, and stolen gold and silver ornaments and expensive household items.
A case has been registered under Sections 399 (preparation to commit dacoity), 402 (assembly for the purpose of committing dacoity), 148 (armed rioting) and 149 (unlawful assembly with common intent) of the Indian Panel Code (IPC).
