The Sadar police had stopped Bachittar Kumar, who hails from Shahjahanpur of Uttar Pradesh, for checking and recovered a knife from his possession.
The police claimed that on being interrogated, Kumar confessed that he was on the run after murdering a youth in Ghaziabad, and had since taken shelter in the vegetable market near Atam Park.
After informing the police station of Link Road in Ghaziabad about the arrest, the Sadar police have registered a case under sections 25, 54 and 59 of the Arms Act for possessing a knife against the accused.
Giving details about the arrest, sub-inspector Amandeep Singh Brar, station house officer (SHO) at Sadar police station, said the accused confessed that he had indulged in a brawl with one of his friends over the petty issue of filling buckets with water on November 14. In a fit of rage, he had stabbed his friend to death with a knife and fled to evade police action.
The SHO said the police station of Link Road in Ghaziabad had booked him under section 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) on November 14 last, and the accused had also been declared a fugitive in the case.
Brar claimed that the accused told the police that he had thrown the knife used in the murder and had bought a new one, adding that after reaching Ludhiana, the accused started working as a labourer in the vegetable market near Atam Park. But no vegetable vendor contacted the police for his police verification.
