Government teacher booked for sexual harassment

With the state government busy with the preparations for Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Teacher's Day speech on Friday, an incident at the Government Model School in Talwara town of Hoshiarpur district has shamed the teacher-student relation. A maths teacher was booked by the police for allegedly sexually harassing a class seven girl on August 23.

The girl told her father about the incident on Thursday evening after which, a formal complaint was lodged against the teacher, Varinder Kumar.
In her statement, the 12-year-old said she, along with her sister, study in classes seven and five respectively at the Government Model School, Sector-II, in Talwara town of Hoshiarpur district.
The girl said on August 23, she had gone to meet her sister during recess. She alleged Kumar was also in class and when she came out, he took her in his lap and started molesting her.

A case under Sections 354 (assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty) and 4 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses (POCSO) Act, 2012, has been lodged at the Talwara police station.

The district education department has also initiated proceedings against Kumar who is yet to be arrested.
District education officer (secondary) Sukhwinder Kaur was unavailable for comments.
