Gurdwara land row: CM forms panel

To solve the dispute over the ownership of a gurdwara land at Mehraj village, chief minister Parkash Singh Badal on Wednesday constituted an inquiry committee and appointed justice GC Garg, retired judge of the Punjab and Haryana high court, its chairman.

The committee will examine the claim of different parties over the land of Gurdawra Maari Shakha in Rampura Phul tehsil of Bathinda district. "The joint secretary of the home department will also be secretary to this committee," a spokesperson in the CM's office has said.

Many times, the dispute led to tension between members of the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) and the Bhullar community.

The Bhullars believe that a smaadh (shrine) on the land belongs to their community from long, while the the SGPC says its claim on the land is as old as the gurdwara.
