Harassed for dowry,woman commits suicide

A 24-year-old woman ended her life by hanging in Saraon village of the district on Sunday night. The deceased, identified as Kuljeet Kaur, was allegedly being harassed for dowry by her parents-in-law.

A 24-year-old woman ended her life by hanging in Saraon village of the district on Sunday night. The deceased, identified as Kuljeet Kaur, was allegedly being harassed for dowry by her parents-in-law.

Kuljeet Kaur married Balraj Singh of Saraon village in July 2010. As per the complaint filed by Kuljeet's father Mukund Singh, a resident of Hardaspura village of Barnala district, a few days after the marriage, Kuljeet's in-laws demanded `15 lakh as dowry from him saying that they wanted to send their son to Canada. Her husband and in-laws started harassing her soon after he failed to pay the required sum.

The Sangrur police have registered a case against the husband Balraj Singh, Sukhvinder Kaur (mother-in-law), Nirmal Singh (husband's uncle) and Paviter Singh (brother-in-law) under Section 304B (dowry death) of the Indian Penal Code and started an investigation to arrest the accused.
