Hobbies make life interesting as they help to discover where our real happiness and satisfaction lies! They wash away stress from our minds, make us creative, develop our personality, keep our spirits high and above all take us far away from idleness which is the root of all evils.
This is what a group of young students at Punjab Agricultural University and Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University who are fervently in love with their respective hobbies expressed while they were asked to roll out the greatness of following hobbies.
Interestingly, the moment we lit the lamp for this discussion, there was cheer among all. One after the other, they revealed how they discovered their passion, since when have they been following and how do they feel while they devote time for their passion.
For Preet Sagar Singh and Karun Kashyap, music gives them a high. It makes them gleeful and keeps their soul content. “Despite my busy routine, I daily take out time for playing keyboard and sing some of the very popular Punjabi, Hindi and English songs. During school, I participated in many functions where my talent got boosted.
I thank my uncle who is fond of playing harmonium inspired me stroll on the musical path”, expresses Singh while Kashyap adds, “I have been singing and playing guitar since class fifth. As I was also part of the school band, it polished my talent. Now, I am looking forward to participate in upcoming youth festival to unfold my talent at a bigger scale. Whenever, I am free I ensure to immerse myself this musical love which not only entertains me but also all my friends around.”
Kamaljeet who holds high enthusiasm for theatre and has been following it from last four years reveals, “It is the youth festivals of my University that gave me the perfect platform to shake hands with theatre. So, far I have played every kind of role and won many awards. It has shaped my personality to such an extent that I cannot express it in mere words. I am so voracious for theatre that even if I am sick, I will never give up performing. I regularly read books on theatre to take my talent to new heights.”
Swaranjeet Singh is another student who loves being on the stage through Bhangra, the folk dance of Punjab. He maintains that this dance keeps him connected to his culture and heritage. “I first performed Bhangra during an annual function in class tenth. My performance was eulogized by one and all which inspired me to develop strong bond with it. Now, it has been about four years, I have been performing in youth festivals. I do perform it in my hostel room and keep looking forward to learn new steps.”
When it comes to photography, Satinder Pal Singh Saini says that since his school days he has been capturing nature, wild life, rural life and all that melts his heart. In short, he is find of capturing life in a click. “I started playing with cameras at home while I was very small. Looking at the old photo albums, made me realise the value of photography and now, I capture whatever leaves me enthralled. Thankfully, I have won many awards in photography and have plans to forward my best pictures in the renowned photography magazines. And, most importantly I am never without my camera as an interesting moment can come anytime.”
For writing, we traced Jaspreet Singh who writes prose and Baldev Kalsi who writes verse; both indulged in it since school days proudly hold the view that writing is one such activity that shows the world right path and can help develop positive mind sets. “I write a lot on social issues and most of my articles regularly appear in the leading dailies. While I write, my mind gets utter peace and so I wish to write till my last breath”, echoes Singh while Kalsi says, “Through my poetry, I want to promote peace and imbibe moral values in the society. I feel poetry connects hearts as it is language of hearts. I feel thankful to god for having blessed me with this talent as it helps to express my emotions and feelings whenever and however I want.”
