State health minister Sham Lal Sharma on Sunday said the government is contemplating to declare cancer as a ND even as he stressed the need for palliative care for the patients suffering from the life consuming disease.

Delivering the presidential address at a function to mark the World Palliative Care Day, Sharma said given the enormity of discomfort, the disease gives to a patient and his or her family both socially and financially, the government is considering giving the disease status of Notified Disease.

The function was organised by Hakim Sanaullah Hospital and Cancer Centre, Mazbug, Sopore in north Kashmir district of Baramulla.

The minister said in a life consuming disease like cancer, management of a patient and his vital statistics is very important.

He said the concept of palliative care becomes very important for such patients who deserve utmost attention by not only their kith and kin but by the doctors, paramedics and other relevant quarters equally.
