In another double murder that has left the residents shocked, unidentified miscreants murdered Congress leader and former president of Jagraon Nagar Council Suresh Goyal, 70, and his wife Shimla Devi, 68, with sharp-edged weapons at their Link Road residence on Wednesday late night.

The miscreants also injured their granddaughter Shagun, 18, who had come from Panchkula to meet her grandparents. She suffered severe injuries in her arm and face and was rushed to the Dayanand Medical College and Hospital.
Following the incident, senior superintendent of police (SSP), Ludhiana Rural, Aashish Chaudhary, deputy superintendent of police (DSP) Surinder Kumar, along with a police party, reached at the spot and started investigation.
In her statement to the police, Shagun stated that between 11pm and 12am some people attacked them when they were sleeping.
She said she had seen one of the accused, who was short in height with a dark complexion and appeared to be in his twenties. The accused attacked her with an intention to kill her, but she ran and bolted the door of one of the rooms and raised the alarm, following which the killers fled.
On herding her screams, the neighbours alerted the police, who reached the spot immediately and rushed the girl to hospital.
The police have registered a case under section 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) against unidentified accused.
The SSP said the police were working on different theories. It was possible that the killers entered the house with intention to commit robbery, but they murdered the duo as they might have woken up. He further added that it could be a planned murder.
The SSP said they have come to know that Goyal was facing controversy over properties. The police were identifying people who were involved in property issues with him.
“We have some clues and will solve the case soon,” he said.
He said when the police reached at spot, the body of Shimla Devi was lying outside the bedroom in a pool of blood, while Goyal was found dead in the kitchen. It indicated that the couple struggled to save their lives, he added.
Goyal was also the former chairman of the Market Committee Jagraon.
Goyal had three sons, but unfortunately he had lost all. One of his sons was killed during militancy. His daughter-in-law Urvashi Goyal is serving as excise and taxation officer in Ludhiana. His second son died in a road mishap, while the third one died after a brief illness.
