A press release issued by the SGPC here said that, interacting with Rajnath, Makkar charged the Congress government in Haryana with interfering in religious affairs. This, Makkar told Rajnath, had led to resentment among the Sikh masses. In a memorandum to Rajnath, Makkar noted that the SGPC had come into existence as per an act passed by the British government in 1925. “As per that act, the SGPC looks after the affairs of gurdwaras in Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and Chandigarh,” he said. He added that Rajnath Singh had also been apprised of the issue of casting of votes by Sehajdhari Sikhs in the SGPC elections.
