How he performed
Known as ‘dharna king’, the first-time MLA is possessive about credit of projects approved by the previous, Congress-led UPA government at the Centre with the SAD-BJP government of Punjab. He made five promises in his campaign — proper sewerage, better roads, electricity supply upgrade, shifting of carcass-dumping ground, and construction of a mother-child hospital. He claims credit for a Rs 36-crore road project under a central scheme, Rs 98-crore sewerage project, and upgrade of two power grids. He filed a case in the high court after state government halted the hospital’s construction started by Congress regime in 2006; work has restarted. He filed a case for shifting the dumping ground as the municipal council failed to do it.

He has done well in urban areas, but there is no development in villages. Congress-held panchayats are not getting their due because the government doesn’t want to share credit,” Dharminder Singh, 34, farmer said.

How he performed
The SAD wanted to launch him in 2012 and chose the new segment of Bassi Pathana. Despite being termed a ‘parachute’ candidate, he won and has got some praise for his work. He lists among his big achievements a recently-started Rs 26-crore sewerage and water supply project, bus-stand constructed atRs 5 crore. and widening of the road to Morinda. He also claims credit for declaration of a 67-km stretch of the Morinda-Patiala road as national highway. A 66-KV power grid was upgraded to 220-KV. His image as a former judge and also as a Scheduled Caste (SC) representative in the Vidhan Sabha has proved an advantage. He raised the issue of SC scholarhip in the assembly. An administrative and judicial complex was also constructed in his tenure.
