The chairperson said that CII will ensure that this year, each northern region state focuses on implementing a social development project. Providing a solution to the problem of drug addiction, she said “More investment in the industry will generate more employment opportunities.”

She added that famers’ suicide in Punjab will go down with the change in cropping pattern, crop insurance and contact farming.

Announcing the CII agenda for 2016-17, she highlighted that CII NR will emphasize on six key areas of focus for building competitive north. The key areas are ease of doing business, competitive small and medium enterprises, world-class infrastructure, sustainable agriculture growth, sustainability and human resource development.

“Major CII initiatives during the year will focus on working closely with the state governments to help and facilitate the states to move up the ranking in Ease of Doing Business parameters. To promote northern region as an agriculture and high-value food powerhouse, CII will work on a comprehensive policy reforms agenda as well,” she said.

For capacity building of ITI faculties, CII NR organises Train the Trainers / Faculty Development Programs. “CII will continue to focus on this and will work with 131 ITIs adopted by CII NR members for their up gradation as well as curriculum revision of these institutes.” she added.

CII is also launching a holistic cluster development project called Sectoral Leadership Program this year. Three clusters have been selected, which include Auto cluster in Faridabad, Bicycle Parts cluster in Ludhiana, and Pharma Cluster in Baddi.

“This year is Agro-Tech Year and CII hopes to present an emerging potential of the sector in the fair. Agro-tech is scheduled for November 19-22 in Chandigarh and will be inaugurated by the President of India,” she said.

“CII’s projection is that riding on the good monsoons, high FDI inflows, low interest rates and positive sentiments, India may register a GDP growth of around 8% in 2016-17.”
