Continuing with his strategy of comparing Punjab chief minister Parkash Singh Badal and deputy CM Sukhbir Badal with dictators and despots, Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) president Partap Singh Bajwa has added Roman emperor Nero's name to the list that includes Saddam Hussein and Muammar Gaddafi.
Speaking at a party function here on Monday, Bajwa said Badals were fiddling while Punjab was burning.
"The threat of revival of militancy looms large over Punjab in the wake of deteriorating law and order situation and helplessness of the police in protecting their own men. The brutal killing of four police officials in a row is a strong smoke signal," he said, referring to the ASI's murder near Jalandhar and previous such cases.
Bajwa said, "Nero fiddled while Rome burned. Sukhbir will be holidaying in Goa on the pretext of the 'chintan shivir'. Let him first put his house in order. The prevailing situation in Punjab is not different from the days when anti-national forces pushed the state towards terrorism in the early 1980s."
Holding Sukhbir responsible for the "anarchy", the PPCC chief expressed anguish over the killing of ASI Gurdev Singh. "Assistant sub-inspector (ASI) Ravinder Pal Singh Mangat was crushed to death in Patiala recently; ASI Kulbir Singh was killed during the farmers' agitation near Tarn Taran; and ASI Ravinderpal Singh was killed by goons of the Youth Akali Dal in Amritsar while he was protecting the dignity of his daughter," he added.
"The Punjab police, who fought militancy boldly, is now in dire straits," he said, accusing the Badals of demoralising the police force.
Bajwa also lashed out at the state government for withdrawing free education facility from class 9 onwards to girl students. He questioned Bathinda MP Harsimrat Kaur Badal's silence on the matter.
Others who addressed the workers' meeting included minister of state for external affairs Preneet Kaur, MLA and former minister Lal Singh, PPCC vice-president (Malwa incharge) Charanjit Singh Channi, MLAs Brahm Mohindra, Hardayal Kamboj and Nirmal Singh, former MLA Madal Lal Jalalpur and former finance minister late Capt Kanwaljit Singh's daughter Manpreet Kaur Dolly.
