A two-member committee will visit the Sant Langowal Institute of Engineering and Technology (SLIET) here on Wednesday to assess the situation after the student riot of May 6.

On Monday evening, the higher education authorities in the union ministry of human resource development decided to send the team on the emergency visit to the deemed university, 15 kilometres from here.

Deputy commissioner Kumar Rahul has confirmed the panel to include retired Punjab and Haryana high court judge SN Aggarwal and retired bureaucrat RP Aggarwal.

Demanding the resignation of director Sunil Pandey, students had created ruckus and set the institute's property ablaze. The university estimates to have lost infrastructure worth Rs 12 crore, which might take two years to recreate.

“The committee will also interact with the director and members of the management and faculty,” said Rahul. “Besides looking into the reasons of the protest that continued for five days, it will study the students' and the teachers' complaints against the director. It will see how much grant the university has claimed and used,” the DC added.

The management had closed the institute for indefinite period to repair the damage and recreate the atmosphere for academic activity and examinations that were postponed. The decision to reopen the campus will be based on situation analysis on June 2.
