PU increases scholarship amount

Panjab University (PU), Chandigarh, has increased the scholarship amount for students under categories, including physically challenged, sports, single girl child, AIDS/cancer patients and on merit-basis.

Panjab University (PU), Chandigarh, has increased the scholarship amount for students under categories, including physically challenged, sports, single girl child, AIDS/cancer patients and on merit-basis. The amount has been enhanced from Rs 6,000 to Rs 8,000 per annum, which was decided in a meeting of the standing committee of the college development council held in Chandigarh on January 21.

Talking to Hindustan Times, Naval Kishore, dean colleges PU, said, "This time we had received more forms than last year for scholarships. Last year around 40 colleges had applied and this time more than 200 PU affiliated colleges had applied. We have updated this information at the university website and we keep sending instructions to colleges to inform their students regarding this scholarship. In fact, we have provided Rs 10,000 scholarship to two cancer patients/students."

A total of 1,438 students had applied for scholarship from the above mentioned categories and the scholarship has been sanctioned to all.

It is pertinent to mention here that only two cancer patients had applied for scholarship for 2013-14. A total of 83 physically challenged students had applied from 29 colleges and 30 had applied from 12 colleges after the due date.

From the sports category, 148 students had applied from 35 colleges and 29 students from four colleges had applied after the due date.

On merit basis, 773 students have applied from 41 colleges and 152 have applied from 15 colleges after the due date.

From the Single girl child category, 165 students have applied from 37 colleges and 56 have applied from 16 colleges after the due date.
