The Punjab government on Saturday transferred director general of police (human resource development) Siddharth Chattopadhyaya, who has lately sparked a controversy as the head of three-member special investigation team (SIT) to investigate the allegation of drug trafficking against Moga police chief Raj Jit Singh Hundal.
Chattopadhyaya, who was stationed in Punjab police headquarters here, has now been posted as DGP, Punjab State Power Corporation Ltd (PSCPL), with office in Patiala.
In police pecking order, the PSPCL posting is seen as “a low profile” job in which Chattopadayaya’s primary task will be to arrange force for the enforcement wing of the power corporation.
While conducting the Punjab and Haryana high court-mandated probe, the 1986-batch IPS officer had created a sensation when he, in an apparent overstepping of his brief, informed the court that he was also probing the role of Punjab DGP Suresh Arora and DGP (intelligence) Dinkar Gupta in the same drug case.
On May 8, the SIT submitted its final report to the court. But Chattopadhyaya sprang a surprise by also submitting a second report that was not signed by the other two SIT members. The next hearing of the case is scheduled on July 26.
Chattopadhyaya’s sensational accusation against top brass had not gone down well with chief minister Captain Amarinder Singh who, without naming him, had warned the police officials against indiscipline. Chattopadhyaya will replace RPS Brar who has been posted as ADGP (HRD).
