The state vigilance bureau (VB) on Friday nabbed a panchayat secretary posted at Bahadurpur village in Sangrur district red-handed while accepting a bribe of Rs 70,000.
A spokesman of the bureau said Ashok Kumar said the accused was accepting the bribe from Jagdeesh Rai of Cheema Mandi in Sunam tehsil.
He said the complainant approached the VB alleging that the panchayat secretary was demanding the bribe for the release of payment in lieu of installation of seven submersible pumps.
After verifying the complaint, the VB laid a trap and the accused was caught red-handed and the money was recovered from him in the presence of two official witnesses. He said a case under the Prevention of Corruption Act has been registered against the accused at VB police station, Patiala.
