Heaps of solid waste along the drain and a thick sheet of waste on the drain had virtually choked the nullah. This is despite the fact that the administration earlier this month started a project to clean the polluted nullah by introducing micro organisms into it.

As part of the project, the implementing agency will be setting up five V-shaped bridges on the nullah where micro organisms present in the water will eat the pollutants.

Municipal corporation commissioner Rakesh Verma said the corporation was making all possible efforts to ensure that solid waste was not dumped into the nullah.

"The problem requires a multi-pronged approach and a holistic solution is the only answer to it. The MC is working on one such project and will implement it soon," he added.

Superintending engineer of the Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB) Karunesh Garg said even as the programme for cleaning the nullah had started, it was the responsibility of all stakeholders to stop polluting it.

"The civic administration should ensure that solid waste was not dumped into the nullah. Door-to-door garbage collection is the best solution to ensure that no solid waste is dumped into the nullah," he said.
