Making this demand here on Saturday, the Police Pensioners' Welfare Association of Punjab said that a timely challan against the main accused, Ranjit Singh Rana, and his associates "will restore confidence of the public in the police force".

Terming the murder as "rarest of rare case", association president Sukhdev Singh Chhinna said the case should be prepared with utmost caution so that there is no scope left for the accused to "get away". They should be given the sternest possible punishment, he added.

The association members observed a two-minute silence at their meeting in the memory of the deceased ASI. They also wore black badges in protest against the murder.
